Leadership

Board President: Sue Stukey

Sue is a native of Massachusetts, but spent many summers in Vermont visiting grandparents in Post Mills, in the eastern part of Orange County. She and her husband Art lived in many places around the country (and overseas) but always came back to Vermont and family. They joined the Washington Unitarian Universalist Congregation about ten years ago, as summer visitors, and for the last few years have served on the Board.

Sue has had years of experience with Unitarian Universalism on both the local and national level. She served eight years on the UUA’s Board of Trustees as the delegate from the Central Midwest District, ending her term in 2007 as she and Art moved to Vermont full  time. She believes that Unitarian Universalism has a voice that should be heard in the dialogue of today, and that the community she finds each summer at the UU Congregation of Washington is dear to her heart and worth preserving.

Vice President: Terri Crowther

Terri moved to Washington in 1990 with her husband Mark. Originally from Connecticut, she moved to Vermont in 1967 and attended Montpelier High School. After spending 13 years in Boston, she returned to Vermont to purchase a business in Montpelier which she ran for 15 years with her husband. Terri retired from full-time employment in 2018 and now works part-time at the Central Vermont Humane Society. She is a certified yoga instructor and teaches a class in Barre.

Terri had not been an active church goer since childhood but when she stepped into the WUUC for the first time in 2017 that changed. “I was immediately drawn to the community of people gathered within this beautiful building. It’s such an inclusive environment. And each week’s speaker presents a range of interesting topics. Washington has such a treasure here…who knew?”

Treasurer: Robert Youngberg

Robert was born in Buffalo, NY and raised in the suburbs. After community college he joined the navy and served on three submarines. He has a BA in history and a masters in librarianship.

Currently he is retired and lives in Montpelier with Elizabeth Youngberg, his wife of over 30 years. His adventures in life include riding a bicycle from Yorktown, VA to San Francisco and living on his sailboat in Hawaii. He has been a member here for over five years and served all this time on the board. He has served as treasurer most of that time.

Secretary: Katharina Mack

Katharina grew up in Germany and moved to the United States in 2000. While living in California, she started spending her summers in Washington, VT until she moved here full time in 2014. Katharina attended her first UU Congregation service in the summer of 2011 and was immediately drawn to the openness of the church and the community she found here. “Having been raised a Catholic and still recovering from the ramifications, I never thought I would want to belong to a church again. The UU Congregation changed my mind – everything I was missing in the Catholic Church, I find here.”

Board Trustee: George Plumb

George grew up a Baptist and changed to Unitarian Universalist in 1968 when he moved to Washington. He went to the Barre UU Church and filled many roles there, including being head of the church. He also saved the steeple on at least two occasions and initiated and installed the “wayside pulpit” which you can read when you drive by.

He now pays as much attention as he can to the building needs of the Washington church, which he loves dearly. However, it is more than he can handle and would greatly appreciate some help.

In Washington he has been a Boy and Girl Scouts leader and served on the planning commission for a few years. He feels very fortunate to own with his wife Doris 143 acres of conserved land. It is not posted, and people are welcome to walk and hunt on it. The land has really gorgeous views from a “sacred circle” near the old farmhouse, including spectacular views from Killington to Mansfield on the twenty acres of “upper meadows” on the hill to the east of the home. He is always happy to guide any visitors on the fifteen-minute walk up there.

Board Trustee: Fran Krushenik

Fran relocated to Warren, VT in 2001 and, several years later, moved to Montpelier. She was teaching in and directing pre-K programs for 48 years and also facilitated workshops for teachers during that time. She was married for 41 years until her husband died in 1998. Fran has three grown children and four grandchildren who she loves spending time with. She volunteers at the Unitarian Church Community Lunch, at the Montpelier Food Pantry and at the pre-K program for 4-year olds in Warren, VT. Fran is an avid Scrabble player and plays at the Montpelier Activity Senior Center once a week.

Board Trustee: Cecile Sherburn

We are very excited about our new vice president! Stay tuned for a bio!
